We specialise in helping clients who have very short turnaround times. Once instructed we guarantee that the audit will be completed within two weeks as an absolute maximum, but many will be completed in as little as 3 working days. We have even completed them within a 24 hour period, when needed. There is no additional charge for projects with short turnaround times.

What are Road Safety Audits?

A Road Safety Audit is a systematic process for examining the implications for road safety when new road schemes or significant changes to the highways network are proposed. The audit will identify any potential road safety issues arising from the proposals. It considers all users of the highway, not just motorised vehicles but other users such as pedestrians or cyclists.

Our Road Safety Audit report will recommend measures that can be taken to resolve or mitigate any safety issues. Whilst road safety auditors are well versed in highway design standards, they are not carrying out a compliance check that a sheme meets design standards. A Road Safety Audit is a specialist process carried out independently from the design or construction process. It will solely focus on what needs to be done to reduce the potential for accidents or harm to road users when the road is in use.

Stages of Road Safety Audits

Road safety and collision reduction should be considered at every stage of the highway design, improvement or construction process. There are four Road Safety Audit (RSA) stages:

Stage 1 RSA – Completion of preliminary design

Stage 2 RSA – Completion of detailed design

(Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the Audit are often combined)

Stage 3 RSA– Completion of construction

Stage 4 RSA– Monitoring

Road Safety Audit Team

Capital Road Safety’s team of road safety auditors are highly experienced. Andy Haunton, a Fellow of SoRSA, heads up our team. Andy has worked in safety audit and AIP for over 20 years and has completed several thousand road safety audits. Immediately before he joined us, Andy worked for Transport for London (TfL) in LRSU as a Principal Auditor. During this time he wrote the first version of TfL’s audit procedure, SQA-0170. He also established many of the processes that TfL auditors follow today, including setting up the audit register.

Road Safety Assessments for developments, planning applications or improvements to road safety

A thorough road safety assessment for development proposals can make the difference to whether a planning application is successful or not. Our team have previous experience of working in Local Authority planning departments. This means they have insight into, not only the requirements of current road safety legislation, but of the way to report findings to meet the needs of planning departments.

We will use a wide range of traffic, transport and other road user data, accident analysis and accessibility data to inform our reports in support of your proposal. Alternatively, we will highlight vulnerabilities or potential hazards that need to be addressed for a successful application. Capital Road Safety can also design pedestrian and cycle schemes and carry out accessibility audits if needed.
