What kinds of traffic survey do we carry out?

As a traffic survey company, Capital Road Safety has developed expertise in all types of road user and traffic survey methods. Below are some of the most commonly used methodologies we employ:

Vehicle speed/volume surveys

Vehicle speed and volume surveys, or ATC surveys (Automatic Traffic Counter) are the most popular survey that we undertake. We use the latest Metrocount Vehicle Classifier units and software. These types of survey use two rubber tubes laid across the carriageway connected to the Metrocount data logger, usually for a period of 7 days. Data outputs include vehicle speeds, vehicle classification, vehicle volume and vehicle direction. Data is presented in a variety of ways, with as much detail as required, right down to the exact time of each individual vehicle if necessary.

We will work with you to understand exactly what data you require and can then produce bespoke data presentation, ensuring the reports focus on what is most important for you. Data is collected for a variety of reasons, including for local authorities to monitor network usage or identify vehicle speeding issues, highway designers to inform design speed or visibility criteria when designing highway improvement schemes and enforcement authorities to monitor speed limit compliance.

Traffic turning counts at all types of road junction

Classified junction turning counts are the second most popular survey that we offer. These can either be undertaken manually or using our camera systems. Each vehicle movement is logged and classified into a vehicle type and is generally grouped into 15 minute totals across the survey period. Data is then presented in an easy to understand format with summary turning diagrams. As with all our surveys, we will work with you to understand exactly what data you need and can tailor the survey and data logging to ensure you get exactly what you need for your project.

Turning counts are undertaken for a variety of reasons, most often in relation to proposed developments or major highway improvements. The data is used for traffic modelling purposes to determine if a junction has capacity to take additional traffic movements, or if improvements to the junction may be necessary.

Parking beat surveys

Parking beat surveys are generally carried out to determine the usage and capacity of on-street parking. We will initially survey the area in question and make a note of all parking restrictions (double yellow lines/single yellow lines etc.) and any dropped kerb areas for driveways. From this we plot all of the information onto a CAD drawing and calculate the theoretical parking capacity for the survey area. We will then undertake parking beat surveys at pre-determined intervals to measure the number of vehicles parked in the area. The vehicle locations are then plotted onto the CAD drawings and the parking capacity calculated in percentage terms.

Most of our parking beat surveys follow the ‘Lambeth’ parking survey methodology, a well established method accepted by the majority of Local Highway Authorities, however we can adapt this methodology to suit your individual project requirements.

Car park surveys

Car Park surveys can be undertaken manually, or using camera systems. The data collected can be used to determine car park capacity levels throughout a day or across a number of days. We work with you to understand what you need to find out about your car park and its usage and then develop a bespoke output to ensure you receive the most relevant data from us.

Pedestrian/cycle movement

We can undertake any type of pedestrian or cycle movement survey. The most common reason for data collection is to determine whether a new pedestrian crossing point or parallel crossing point (combined pedestrian/cycle crossing) is justified. Although PV²is no longer an absolute method of determining the justification for a pedestrian crossing point, it is still widely used as an indicator, together with other highway and data factors. Our surveys generally classify pedestrians into four groups, unaccompanied children, adults, elderly and those with a visible disability. We can, however, tailor the survey to suit your particular requirements.

Queue length analysis

Queue length surveys are generally undertaken to help determine junction performance. Often undertaken as part of a junction turning count survey, we will measure the queue length on each approach to a junction, generally at 5 minute intervals. Data is presented either as a length in metres, or it can be presented as a number of PCU’s (passenger car units).

Degree of Saturation, cruise time and journey time analysis

These surveys are a specialist area of traffic surveying used to inform traffic modelling, generally for signalised junctions. Degree of Saturation determines the maximum number of vehicles that can flow through a junction at a green signal, whilst cruise time and journey time surveys collect data between specific junctions across a particular modelled network. Our methodology is as defined by Transport for London in their traffic modelling guidelines, although this can be modified to suit any Local Highway Authorities specific methodologies.
